A Yorkshire native and lifelong cinephile, Ben grew up breathing in the Scarborough sea air and watching John Hughes VHS tapes with his brother, Sam. As the son of a headmaster, he channeled his love for storytelling into an award-winning directing career.
Ben is best known for his acclaimed work on the hit Netflix series Sex Education, starring Gillian Anderson and Asa Butterfield, as well as Year of the Rabbit with Matt Berry. He’s directed a range of beloved TV series that, coincidentally, begin with the letter »C«—including Cuckoo, The Circuit, Cardinal Burns, Cockroaches, and Catastrophe, for which he earned a BAFTA nomination for Best Director.
Recently, Ben collaborated with Sally Wainwright on The Ballad of Renegade Nell, a swashbuckling 18th-century series for Disney+, and just wrapped filming Joy, a Netflix feature based on the groundbreaking story of the world’s first in vitro fertilisation baby, starring Thomasin McKenzie, Bill Nighy, and James Norton. He also, notably, helped get Hodor a gig in a KFC ad.
